Undeniably though, the passage we associate as being the basic element of “Talk Dirty” comes in at the one minute mark, and it’s quite similar too, with virtually the same sax line and backbeat. It’s interesting how this tune seems to blend-at least on a cursory level-the saxes we know from “Talk Dirty” with the more linear bounce of “Blurred Lines”. That which gets us out of our seats in “Talk Dirty” comes not from “Talk Dirty” at all, but is a sample from an earlier song. It’s the signature of that tune-the hook-the element with just enough rub and just enough spark to fuel to a party’s fire.īut here’s the interesting thing: There’s nothing in the song itself to intoxicate us. I would argue, instead, that the energy which intoxicates us comes from that chorus-that out of control catharsis provided by a jaunty, Semitic sax and its corollary backbeat. The “I’m Different” rapper isn’t different enough for that. So again, what is it about the song? Is it the feature verse from 2 Chainz? Again, I’m inclined to say no. However, more than the story, more than the vertebra, it’s the song which has provided his biggest break-or at any rate, a break big enough to call for repackaging his third album (internationally titled Tattoos) into something more eponymous (it’s been released in the US as Talk Dirty, and features seven tracks off Tattoos.) The way he profiled his rehabilitation certainly helped feed the publicity machine. Now, I’m not discounting his particular comeback story-one of overcoming a broken vertebrae in the worst of places (a pain I can sympathize with, having snapped one of my own cervical vertebrae in 2009). Sure, the man had been a celebrated singer, dancer, and songwriter, but he still needed his mega-single-his “Talk Dirty”-to garner the amount of buzz he has acquired in the past few weeks. “ Even though I had sold millions in America, people still didn’t know who I was, " said Derulo about his pre- Talk Dirty days. I would argue it’s not Jason Derulo himself, as the man has lingered for a while in an interesting conundrum-one that affects many of today's nascent pop stars: he was a bona fide hit-maker without a widely recognized name.
